About STAR4D®

DSC04905 The Spray Technique Analysis and Research for Defense® program provides exceptional painter training for military facilities through expertise, knowledge, and skill. STAR4D is able to assist military facilities with strategies and techniques that will enable them to use less coating and improve finish quality.

Since STAR4D's first training in 2003, hundreds of painters from nearly 100 bases have been trained. Training has hit almost all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Japan. Click here to view a map of all trained bases.

Results

Based on an analysis of 418 trainees, pre- and post-test results showed:

  • 16.61% increase in transfer efficiency
  • 13.33% savings in coatings
  • 9.52% reduction in VOC emissions

DSC04692

In the paint booth: If a facility uses an average of 50 gallons of coating per week, throughout the year a savings of over 300 gallons will be achieved by the 13% savings in coating usage.

The STAR4D® program is funded by the Defense Logistics Agency of the Department of Defense. Under STAR4D, Southwest Research Institute partners with the IWRC.
