Spray Technique Analsysis and Research for Defense (STAR4D®)

Tobyhanna Army Depot is the largest, full-service electronics maintenance facility in the Department of Defense (DoD) with a mission of total sustainment, including design, manufacture, repair and overhaul of hundreds of electronic systems that include satellite terminals, radio and radar systems, telephones, electro-optics, night vision and anti-intrusion devices, airborne surveillance equipment, navigational instruments, electronic warfare and guidance and control systems for tactical missiles.

Tobyhanna began training on-site with their VirtualPaint system back in 2008 and then in early August 2009, Tobyhanna began holding the STAR4Defense certification course. Along with holding certification courses, Tobyhanna has been a great partner with the STAR4Defense in blasting research.

Mark Brennan has been working at Tobyhanna Army Depot for 10 years. As a paint leader, Mark was certified as a STAR4Defense Coatings Technician back in November 2009.

His favorite part of supervising the course was to be able to work with the students on the VirtualPaint. "It makes them stop and think about what they are doing and hopefully they take that back to their shop," he says. The course utilizes three kinds of learning; classroom, in-the-booth, and virtual reality with the VirtualPaint. Mark says each portion is beneficial to the course. In the classroom students were able to learn the history and importance of properly applying CARC. In-the-booth, Mark was able to show them first hand their application mistakes and how to correct them, while using the VirtualPaint makes them think about what they are going to do. It helps to understand how to be more consistent with the applied mil thickness and how they can properly apply CARC.
